Collected Stories
Donald Margulies
Urban Theater Project of Iowa’s first production came in February of 2005 when we staged Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories. In keeping with the company’s mission, we collaborated with Brucemore, an historic site in Cedar Rapids, to present our inaugural production in the Garden House, a property on the estate, which had recently been opened to the public for events. Collected Stories was the first such event held in Brucemore’s Garden House.
The production, a two-woman, full-length play set in the apartment of an aging New York poet, was set in the living room of the Garden House. In an effort to create a different kind of theater, an intimate and unique experience, that was accessible to anyone interested, the capacity of the audience was 28, the ticket price was set at $10 (the lowest-priced live theater ticket in the area), and the action of the play took place about two feet from the first row of the audience. The technical aspects of the production (lighting and sound) consisted of three self-clamp work lights, one household dimmer, and a boom box set up in the corner of the room, run manually by the director.
