TRUE WEST
SAM SHEPARD
In an effort to provide the same intimate, unique, and accessible experience but wanting to do something very different than Collected Stories, Urban Theater Project of Iowa’s second production was True West by Sam Shepard. Continuing our company goal to take theater into the community, we chose an empty storefront in downtown Cedar Rapids, owned by a long-time Cedar Rapids downtown merchant and loyal arts supporter. She agreed to let us use the space, which had been empty for nearly five years.
This production had four characters and was set in the middle of a cavernous, raw space staged with the audience of 75 seated in three-quarter round. Like our first production, the action of True West took place in close proximity to the audience, the ticket price was set at $10, and the technical aspects of the production were simple. This time we used two household dimmers, eight self-clamp worklights, and a laptop for sound cues.
